q Hi Dr. Standley, (Scratches on my cornea)

I have some scratches on my cornea (the white of my eyeball) that have been there for some time. I can not remember an accident which caused them. I would like to know if an ophthamologist can possibly "erase" or remove these scratches and approximately how much the fee range could be for this.

Thanks!

a Dear M:

Thank you for the e-mail.

Scratches on the cornea can even be caused by dirt, overuse of contact lenses, accidents or the "sand" that gets in the corner of your eye in the morning, moving about and scratching the cornea.

I've scratched my cornea several times, although not bad enough to produce scar tissue. Generally when the cornea is scratched, the pain alone is noticeable. And typically a patch is worn to protect the eye from light during the healing process. The cornea is the fastest healing tissue in the human body; therefore, most corneal abrasions will heal within 24 - 36 hours.

I don't know how much the fee would be to repair this . . . does it bother you? Is it sightly?

You're best bet is to call an ophthamologist's office and ask if they perform this type of procedure. Ask about the fee, the risks and if the procedure is even worth it or necessary.

Also, call "at least" 3 ophthamologist's office's and ask the exact same questions. This will help you arrive at an informed decision.

A Bazillion Blessings~ Dr. Standley
